Caesar's doorzettingsvermogen
Hij werd geboren op 13 juli 101 v.Chr.. Al wat hij wilde moest gebeuren.
Toen hij 19 jaar werd, gehoorzaamde hij zijn ouders niet meer. Caesar zei tegen
zijn vrienden dat ze niet slim waren. Hij dacht dat hij veel meer waard was dan
de andere patriciërs (=de rijken). Later ging hij studeren op het Griekse
eiland Rhodos. Caesar leerde voor een politieke loopbaan. Maar toen Caesar naar
Rhodos ging werd hij gevangenengenomen door zeerovers. De zeerovers vroegen
losgeld aan Caesar. Hij zei op een avond tegen de zeerovers dat hij ze allemaal
zal kruisigen. En het gebeurde. Pas daarna begon hij aan zijn studies. Toen
Caesar werkte aan zijn politieke loopbaan behoorde hij tot de Populares (= de
Volkspartij van Marius). In 69 v. Chr. begon Caesar als Quaestor
(=penningmeester). In het jaar 63 v. Chr. vocht Caesar tegen de Catilinariërs.
Caesar's moeilijkste overwinning
Caesar overwon heel Frankrijk (58-50 v. Chr.) en hij schreef het boek "De
Bello Gallico" over de Gallische oorlog. Hij zei dat de Belgen de
dappersten waren van al de Galliërs. Hij vroeg aan de senaat of hij de
gouverneur mocht worden van de provincie Gallië. In 57 en 56 v. Chr.
veroverde hij geheel Frankrijk en een paar delen van de Nederlanden ten zuiden
van de Rijn. Deze gebieden werden Gallië genoemd. Het blijft een droom. In
het jaar 55 v. Chr. stak Caesar met 80 schepen en 80.000 man naar Engeland over.
Het aanvallen ging moeilijk, maar het volgende jaar kwam hij terug met 800
schepen in plaats van 80. Hij heeft Zuid-Engeland niet kunnen veroveren. Maar
pas in 43 na Chr. werd Engeland onder keizer Claudius veroverd.
Vercingetorix en Caesar
In 52 v. Chr. kwamen zuidelijke stammen in opstand onder hun leider
Vercingetorix, omdat de Gallische gewoonten, de geestesgesteldheid en de zeden
in botsing kwamen met de Romeinse denkvormen. Gaius Julius Caesar kon de stad
Gergovia (Auvergne - Frankrijk) niet veroveren.In Alesia (niet ver van Dijon)
had Vercingetorix zich verschanst. Vier dagen lang zag het er voor de Romeinen
somber uit. Om zijn leger te redden gaf Vercingetorix zich over en wierp zich
aan de voeten van Caesar. Zes jaar later werd Vercingetorix gewurgd (in Rome ).
"Alea iacta est" (De teerling is geworpen)
De Rubico - een bescheiden bergrivier, tussen Ravenna en Rimini - is niet zo
maar een grens: geen enkele Romeinse generaal heeft het recht met zijn troepen
deze te overschrijden, op straffe van tot opstandeling en "vijand van het
vaderland" te worden verklaard. Maar Caesar stak toch met zijn leger in 49
v. Chr. over de Rubico om de Senaat - die hem onrecht aandeed - de les te
spellen en riep "Alea iacta est" . De Senaat was woedend en dat
betekende dat er een burgeroorlog uitbrak.
Zijn dood
Toen Julius Caesar koning wou worden, werd er een complot gesmeed om Caesar
te vermoorden. Het complot werd uitgevoerd door Cassius, Brutus en andere
Senatoren. Maar Brutus was een beschermeling en vriend van Caesar. Gaius Julius
Caesar kwam op 15 maart 44 v. Chr. het Senaatsgebouw ongewapend binnen gewandeld
en werd vermoord door hen. Toen Caesar zag dat Brutus ook een dolk in zijn hand
had met bloed zei hij teleurgesteld "Et tu, Brute!" (Ook gij,
Brutus). Vervolgens trok hij zijn toga over zijn hoofd en stierf door de
dolksteken.
